Nicotinamide mononucleotide, commonly abbreviated NMN, is a naturally occurring nucleotide. Its structure consists of a nicotinamide ring attached to a ribose sugar that carries a phosphate group. The molecular formula is C11H15N2O8P, and the molar mass is about 334.22 grams per mole. In cells, NMN is an intermediate in the salvage pathway that recycles nicotinamide to maintain NAD+ levels. It is not the same compound as NAD+, although it is a direct precursor in one enzymatic step.
Inside cells, the enzyme nicotinamide phosphoribosyltransferase, or NAMPT, converts nicotinamide and a ribose-phosphate donor into NMN. A second enzyme, NMN adenylyltransferase, then converts NMN into NAD+. NAD+ participates in redox reactions and serves as a substrate for signaling enzymes such as sirtuins, PARPs, and CD38. Because NAD+ levels tend to decline with age in many organisms, NMN has drawn interest as a possible way to influence that decline. Whether oral NMN reliably raises NAD+ in human tissues, and whether any such change modifies disease risk, remain open research questions.
NMN is present in small amounts in some foods, including certain vegetables, fruits, and animal products, but food content varies widely and is not well standardized. In laboratory research, NMN is used as a tool compound to study NAD+ metabolism, mitochondrial function, and cellular stress responses. Animal studies have reported changes in NAD+ levels and various physiological measures after NMN administration, but species differences and study designs limit direct extrapolation to humans. Human trials have largely focused on safety, tolerability, and pharmacokinetics, with fewer studies examining clinical endpoints.
Analytical laboratories identify and quantify NMN using several complementary techniques. High-performance liquid chromatography with ultraviolet detection is widely used for purity and assay work. Liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry provides greater sensitivity and is common for biological matrices. Nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy supports structural confirmation and can distinguish related nucleotides. Accurate measurement depends on reference standards, validated methods, and careful sample preparation, especially because NMN can convert to related compounds under some conditions.
Regulatory treatment of NMN varies by jurisdiction and has changed over time. Some countries allow it in dietary supplements, while others treat it as a novel food ingredient requiring safety review. In the United States, the Food and Drug Administration has questioned whether NMN can be lawfully marketed as a dietary supplement because of drug preclusion provisions. Sports organizations have separate rules, and NMN is not currently on the World Anti-Doping Agency prohibited list. These differences create uncertainty for manufacturers, retailers, and researchers seeking consistent legal pathways.

Chemically, NMN is described by the molecular formula C11H15N2O8P and a molecular mass near 334.22 g/mol. The beta anomer has a CAS Registry Number of 1094-61-7. It is typically supplied as a white to off-white powder for laboratory use. The molecule carries a phosphate group and a positively charged nicotinamide ring, giving it polar and water-soluble character. These properties influence how it is detected, purified, and stored in research and analytical laboratories.
Nicotinamide mononucleotide, abbreviated NMN, is a nucleotide composed of nicotinamide, ribose, and phosphate. Its structure links nicotinamide to D-ribose 5-phosphate through a glycosidic bond, placing it in the pyridine nucleotide family. The compound exists in alpha and beta anomeric forms, and the beta form is the one used in NAD+ biosynthesis. NMN is not a protein or a hormone; it is a small water-soluble molecule that occurs in living cells as a metabolic intermediate.
Natural sources of NMN include mammals, plants, and microorganisms, where it functions as an intermediate in NAD+ salvage and biosynthesis pathways. In mammals, the enzyme nicotinamide phosphoribosyltransferase produces NMN from nicotinamide and phosphoribosyl pyrophosphate. NMN is then converted to NAD+ by nicotinamide mononucleotide adenylyltransferase. Some foods contain measurable NMN, but reported amounts vary widely by species, tissue, and analytical method. The extent to which dietary NMN contributes to cellular NAD+ pools remains an open research question.
Stability testing examines how temperature, humidity, light, and pH affect NMN over time. The compound is generally stored cold, often at minus twenty degrees Celsius or lower, in a desiccated container protected from light. Aqueous solutions tend to be less stable than dry powder because hydrolysis and dephosphorylation can occur, potentially forming nicotinamide riboside or other degradation products. Stress studies may expose samples to heat, acid, base, oxidation, and strong light to identify likely degradation pathways. Results from such studies help define shelf life and handling recommendations, though exact stability depends on formulation and packaging.
Quality control for NMN materials typically includes identity, assay, purity, and impurity profiling. Tests may cover residual solvents, heavy metals, microbial limits, and water content, depending on the intended use and local rules. Impurity profiles can include related substances such as nicotinamide, nicotinamide riboside, and NAD+, which may form during synthesis or storage. Because commercial NMN can be offered as different salts or hydrate forms, a certificate of analysis should state the form and the analytical methods used. Independent verification is relevant because supplement markets vary in testing requirements and enforcement.
Nicotinamide mononucleotide, commonly abbreviated NMN, is a naturally occurring nucleotide. Its structure combines a nicotinamide ring with a ribose sugar and a phosphate group. The compound appears in cells across many organisms as an intermediate in the production of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide, or NAD+. Because NMN sits close to NAD+ in metabolism, it has drawn interest in biochemistry and aging research. The molecule is not a dietary essential nutrient in the classical sense, and its presence in food is generally low and variable.
NAD+ serves as a coenzyme in redox reactions and as a substrate for enzymes involved in DNA repair and cellular signaling. In the salvage pathway, nicotinamide is converted to NMN by the enzyme NAMPT. NMN is then converted to NAD+ by NMNAT enzymes. A separate route links nicotinamide riboside to NMN through phosphorylation. These pathways maintain NAD+ levels, which can decline with age or metabolic stress in some tissues. The relative contribution of circulating NMN to tissue NAD+ remains an active area of study.
== LGBT rights == Article 520 of the penal code of 1949, prohibits having homosexual relations, i.e. "carnal relations against the order of nature", and provides for up to three-years imprisonment. In 2010 the Public Security Police began a crackdown that led to the arrest of over 25 men. The men were charged with various crimes ranging from homosexual acts and illegal drug use, to encouraging homosexual behavior and organizing obscene parties.
== Tissue and subcellular distribution == Galectin-7 is found both intracellularly and extracellularly. It is secreted via a non-classical, endoplasmic reticulum–Golgi–independent pathway and can form galectin–glycan lattices by clustering on cell-surface receptors. It is also present in primary cilia of epithelial cell types such as those of the airway and kidney.
=== First confirmed cases: May–June 2022 === On 12 May 2022, the North Korean government declared a "severe national emergency", after samples from an unspecified number of people tested positive for COVID-19. This marked the first time that North Korea had publicly acknowledged the existence of COVID-19 cases in the country. The Korean Central News Agency stated that Supreme Leader Kim Jong Un had called an emergency meeting of the Politburo of the Workers' Party of Korea after learning of the samples, which were sourced from residents of Pyongyang and had symptoms "consistent with" the Omicron variant. The Politburo recommended the implementation of a "maximum" emergency quarantine, to include nationwide lockdowns, border restrictions, and restrictions on group sizes in workplaces. During the politburo meeting, the previous anti-pandemic strategy was criticised. NK News reported that the entire country had been placed under a lockdown two days prior, though farmers in border regions close to South Korea were seen still tending the fields. It was later reported by state media that at least one North Korean died after testing positive, and that 187,800 people are now under quarantine due to "fever". On 13 May, Kim Jong Un held a meeting at the State Emergency Epidemic Prevention Headquarters, where he called for further anti-pandemic work, lockdowns, and isolation of suspected cases. The effort to stop the spread was declared to be a supreme task of the party.
==== Indonesia ==== In Indonesian markets, tofu is usually available in two forms: tahu putih or common white firm tofu; and tahu goreng or fried tofu that has developed a brown skin. Tofu is usually fried in palm oil. Although pre-fried tofu is often sold cold, it is seldom eaten directly and requires additional cooking. Tahu yun yi or tahu Bandung is yellow tofu colored with turmeric. Popular Indonesian tofu dishes include tahu gejrot and kupat tahu of West Java. Tahu gejrot is tahu pong type of hollow fried tofu cut into small pieces, served with a thin, watery dressing made by blending palm sugar, vinegar, and sweet soy sauce, garnished with chili pepper, garlic, and shallot. Kupat tahu is slices of tofu served with ketupat rice cake, usually in peanut sauce dressing. Slices of tofu are usually mixed in gado-gado, ketoprak and siomay. Bacem is a method of cooking tofu originating in Central Java. The tofu is boiled in coconut water, mixed with galangal, Indonesian bay leaves, coriander, shallot, garlic, tamarind and palm sugar. After the spicy coconut water has completely evaporated, the tofu is fried until it is golden brown. The result is moist but rather firm, sweet, and spicy tofu. This cooked tofu variant is commonly known as tahu bacem in Indonesian. Tahu bacem is commonly prepared along with tempeh and chicken.

=== The "flow" === In the 1970s Csikszentmihalyi started to study flow, a state of absorption where one's abilities are well-matched to the demands at-hand. Flow is characterized by intense concentration, loss of self-awareness, a feeling of being perfectly challenged (neither bored nor overwhelmed), and a sense "time is flying". Flow is intrinsically rewarding; it can also assist in the achievement of goals (e.g., winning a game) or improving skills (e.g., becoming a better chess player). Anyone can experience flow, in different domains, such as play, creativity, and work. Flow is achieved when the challenge of the situation meets one's personal abilities. A mismatch of challenge for someone of low skills results in a state of anxiety; insufficient challenge for someone highly skilled results in boredom. The effect of challenging situations means that flow is often temporarily exciting and variously stressful, but this is considered eustress, which is also known as "good" stress. Eustress is arguably less harmful than chronic stress, although the pathways of stress-related systems are similar. Both can create a "wear and tear" effect; however, the differing physiological elements and added psychological benefits of eustress might well balance any wear and tear experienced. Csikszentmihalyi identified nine indicator elements of flow: 1. Clear goals exist every step of the way, 2. Immediate feedback guides one's action, 3. There is a balance between challenges and abilities, 4. Action and awareness are merged, 5. Distractions are excluded from consciousness, 6.
A large proportion of commercial drugs (e.g. aspirin, ivermectin, cyclosporin, taxol) are derived from natural products that evolved due to their involvement in ecological interactions. While it has been proposed that the study of natural history could contribute to the discovery of new drug leads, most drugs derived from natural products were not discovered due to prior knowledge of their ecological functions. However, many fundamental biological discoveries have been facilitated by the study of plant toxins. For example, the characterization of the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor, the first neurotransmitter receptor to be identified, ensued from investigations into the mechanisms of action of curare and nicotine. Similarly, the muscarinic acetylcholine receptor takes its name from the fungal toxin muscarine. Whereas aquatic fungi provide specialized metabolites of interest for antibiotics, e.g. pestalone. Pestalone inhibits the growth of marine bacteria, the pathway to produce pestalone by marine fungi was found not to work when the bacteria is absent. The compound pestalone was derived from a marine fungus located in the Bahamas Islands on the surface of a brown alga, Rosenvingea sp. Development in biotechnology focuses on aquatic fungi in the pursuit of new antibiotics was inspired by terrestrial fungi, the cross over is not equivalent as demands in aquatic fungi are not exact to their terrestrial counter parts. Some aquatic fungi have shown changes to sphingolipid production under stressors such as acid resulting in the inhibition of biofilm formation.
Solexa, now part of Illumina, was founded by Shankar Balasubramanian and David Klenerman in 1998, and developed a sequencing method based on reversible dye-terminators technology, and engineered polymerases. The reversible terminated chemistry concept was invented by Bruno Canard and Simon Sarfati at the Pasteur Institute in Paris. It was developed internally at Solexa by those named on the relevant patents. In 2004, Solexa acquired the company Manteia Predictive Medicine in order to gain a massively parallel sequencing technology invented in 1997 by Pascal Mayer and Laurent Farinelli. It is based on "DNA clusters" or "DNA colonies", which involves the clonal amplification of DNA on a surface. The cluster technology was co-acquired with Lynx Therapeutics of California. Solexa Ltd. later merged with Lynx to form Solexa Inc.
Following the nationwide collapse of the Whig Party in 1854, many of Knoxville's Whigs, including Brownlow, were unwilling to support the new Republican Party formed by northern Whigs, and instead aligned themselves with the anti-immigrant American Party (commonly called the "Know Nothings"). When this movement disintegrated, Knoxville's ex-Whigs turned to the Opposition Party. In 1858, Opposition Party candidate Horace Maynard, with Brownlow's endorsement, soundly defeated Democratic candidate J.C. Ramsey (J.G.M. Ramsey's son) for the 2nd district's congressional seat.
Basic diagnostic medical devices (e.g., stethoscope, tongue depressor) are typically used. After examining for signs and interviewing for symptoms, the doctor may order medical tests (e.g., blood tests), take a biopsy, or prescribe pharmaceutical drugs or other therapies. Differential diagnosis methods help to rule out conditions based on the information provided. During the encounter, properly informing the patient of all relevant facts is an important part of the relationship and the development of trust within the context of the doctor-patient relationship. The medical encounter is then documented in the medical record, which is a legal document in many jurisdictions. Follow-up encounters may be shorter but follow the same general procedure, and specialists follow a similar process. The diagnosis and treatment may take only a few minutes or a few weeks, depending on the complexity of the issue. The components of the medical interview and encounter are:

The first universal common ancestor (FUCA) is proposed to have been a non-cellular entity that was the earliest organism with a genetic code capable of performing biological translation of RNA molecules to protein formation through peptide synthesis. Its descendants would include the last universal common ancestor (LUCA) and, therefore, all modern cells. FUCA would also be the ancestor of ancient sister lineages of LUCA with no direct modern descendants, but which may have transferred genetic material horizontally into the genomes of early descendants of LUCA. FUCA is thought to have been composed of progenotes, ancient biological systems that would have used RNA for their genome and self-replication. By comparison, LUCA would have had a complex metabolism and a DNA genome containing hundreds of genes grouped into several gene families.
=== Withdrawal === Discontinuation of alcohol after extended heavy use and associated tolerance development (resulting in dependence) can result in alcohol withdrawal. Alcohol is one of the most dangerous drugs to withdraw from. Alcohol withdrawal can cause confusion, paranoia, anxiety, insomnia, agitation, tremors, fever, nausea, vomiting, autonomic dysfunction, seizures, and hallucinations. In severe cases, death can result. Delirium tremens is a condition that develops in some cases of severe withdrawal, with onset typically 48–72 hours after discontinuation. It is considered a medical emergency and should be treated in an inpatient or intensive care unit.
DMG-PEG 2000 is a synthetic lipid formed by the PEGylation of myristoyl diglyceride. It is used to manufacture lipid nanoparticles that are used in mRNA vaccines, and in particular forms part of the drug delivery system for the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine.
=== Antimigraine agents === Antimigraine agents such as the triptans like sumatriptan act as agonists of the serotonin 5-HT1B, 5-HT1D, and/or 5-HT1F receptors. Earlier antimigraine agents were the ergoline derivatives and ergot-related drugs such as ergotamine, dihydroergotamine, and methysergide, which act as non-selective serotonin receptor agonists.

NMN stands for nicotinamide mononucleotide. It is a nucleotide intermediate in the cellular pathway that produces NAD+, a coenzyme involved in energy metabolism and signaling. NMN is not the same compound as NAD+.
NMN is a direct precursor to NAD+ in the salvage pathway. The enzyme NMNAT converts NMN into NAD+ by adding an adenine nucleotide group. This relationship is why NMN is studied in the context of NAD+ decline.
Yes, NMN is produced naturally in cells as part of NAD+ recycling. It also appears in small and variable amounts in some foods. Its natural presence does not by itself establish that supplemental NMN has clinical benefits.
Solid NMN is often kept cool, dry, and protected from light. Long-term storage may use temperatures at or below minus twenty degrees Celsius. Moisture and repeated temperature changes should be avoided.
